Native habitat

Dense forests and woodlands of Bolivia, Brazil, northwestern Argentina, and western Paraguay. They form flocks of 10 to 20 individuals and forage at treetop level, nesting in tree cavities and migrating to lower elevations in fall and winter.

Appearance

Mainly green plumage with a brown-black-grey crown, green cheeks, cobalt blue flight feathers, and a long maroon tail. The chest shows subtle scalloped markings and the belly has a red-maroon patch. Males and females are identical in appearance.
