Forests, open woodlands, and city gardens across the Indian subcontinent, from the foothills of the Himalayas south through India and Sri Lanka. They avoid arid western India and high elevations. Social birds that move in flocks and are known for swift, acrobatic flight.
A slender, elegant parakeet with a long blue-green tail tipped in white. This species is strongly sexually dimorphic. Males have a vivid pinkish-red head that shades to purple-blue at the back of the crown and nape, a narrow black neck collar, a black chin stripe, and a red shoulder patch. Females have a soft blue-grey head, a yellow collar in place of the black, and lack the chin stripe and shoulder patch entirely.
Gentle, quiet, and elegant compared to many parrots of similar size. Plum-headed parakeets tend to be less demanding and less noisy than other Psittacula species, making them appealing for those who want a beautiful, personable bird without the intensity of larger parrots. They can learn to talk and enjoy human interaction, though they may be somewhat shy initially.
