Native habitat

Lowland tropical rainforests and seasonally flooded varzea forests of the Amazon Basin. The White-bellied Caique is found south of the Amazon River in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia; the Black-headed Caique north of the river. Both species are canopy dwellers, foraging in the treetops for fruit and seeds.

Appearance

A compact, stocky parrot with a short square tail and strikingly pure, contrasting colors. White-bellied Caiques have a bright orange-yellow cap, yellow cheeks, a clean white belly, and green wings and back. Black-headed Caiques replace the orange cap with solid black. Both species have a horn-colored beak and pink feet. Sexes are identical and DNA testing is required to determine sex.

Known as the clowns of the parrot world for their acrobatic, high-energy antics. They surf on their backs, wrestle with toys, and perform for attention. Caiques are highly social, bond deeply with their owners, and require significant daily interaction. Best suited for experienced bird owners; can be prone to hormonal aggression without consistent training.
